My Week 5th June- Week 23

My Week- 5th June- Week 23

Don’t hibernate – rejuvenate this winter
Use the cooler months to step up your weight loss efforts

Use winter to sharpen your resolve, set new goals to see you through and emerge a slimmer, healthier person come spring.

Who you gonna call?  Exercise Busters!

Excuse- It’s too cold to exercise
Answer – Exercise will warm me up
- Nothing warms you up faster than getting active.  If you don’t want to venture outside, choose activities you can do indoors such as home DVD workouts, gym classes or indoor swimming.

Excuse- I don’t feel like salads
Answer – I can add warm ingredients
- Finding satisfaction in your meals is important.  And if it’s comfort food your after, simply tailor the ingredients.  Add roast pumpkin and warm chicken to salads, or use the sandwich press for a toasty sandwich

Excuse – I’ll get back on track after winter
Answer – Think about what you’ve achieved so far.  Remember, you don’t have to work harder or do anything differently throughout winter, just keep following the program – and always build in variety to your food and activity choices.

5 Fun Winter Ideas

1.  Use your weekly Propoints allowance for a warm winter dessert
2.  Buy yourself on a new pair of jeans to suit your changing figure
3.  Put some warmer highlights through your hair to reward a goal reached
4.  Host a dinner party using Weight Watchers Recipes
5.  Rug up and read the Weight Watchers blogs, magazines and message boards

Souper- size me

Soups are an excellent way to boost your nutrient intake in the colder months and warm from within.  A bowl of soup can make a hearty meal or a satisfying snack and even give your weight loss efforts an edge as long as you choose wisely.

Slurp your way to weight loss

Regularly including a portion controlled soup as a starter before you start your main meal is a smart strategy in winter, when you’re likely to burn less kilojoules in physical activity and reach for the comfort food.

According to Dr Barbara Rolls, research from their Penn State University Eating Laboratory demonstrates that soup should be an automatic inclusion in healthy weight loss plans.  In fact, eating a healthy soup before a main meal helps lower the total kilojoule intake at that meal by an average of 400 kilojoules.  This kilojoule deficit is just what’s needed to counteract a little hibernation time this winter.

Super Soup Ingredients

Low GI Legumes and whole grains – Chickpeas, split peas, cannellini and red kidney beans along with whole grains, like barley and quinoa, bump up dietary fibre scores to between 3-6g per serve on average

Varied Veges – With 75g vegetables equal to a serve you can certainly slurp your way to five a day.  Seasonal winter vegetables include broccoli, pumpkin and squash.

Cheaper meat cut – Due to their slow cooking time, cheaper cuts of meat like lamb shanks will tenderise beautifully and boost the protein, iron and zinc contents of the soups.

Salt reduced stocks – Cut down on salt when cooking soups are home and experiment with pungent herbs and spices and add flavour.

Smart switches – Creamy and condensed soups can clock up around 10g of fat per serve, so check labels when you are shopping.  When making your own Asian laksas and soups, use coconut flavoured, light evaporated milk instead of coconut milk.

The benefits of exercise and how to get them
We all know exercise delivers weight loss, health and fitness.  But Weight Watchers exercise scientist Martha Lourey – Bird shows you how to achieve this

Ideally your exercise regime should include the following three elements

Cardio Exercise – Makes you huff and puff- eg – walking, jogging, swimming, rowing, cycling etc.  Do it moderately (can still talk) 30 minutes, five days a week or do it vigorously (can’t talk) 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week.

Resistance Exercise – Builds strong muscles and bones, increase your metabolism and improve your body shape, posture and tone- eg- Crossfit, Free Weights in the gym and / or try specific resistance exercises such as push ups, squats, lunches.  Do 1-3 sets of 8-12 reps of 8-10 exercises at least twice a week.

Flexibility – Helps improve your range of motion, posture and mobility – eg- stretch all the muscles you can- hamstrings, chest, back, calves by holding the stretch still, no bouncing (unless you have done PNF stretching before).  There should be mild discomfort, but no pain.  Try it 2-3 days/ week for 10-30 seconds and up to 3-4 reps per stretch

However, if you are unable to do this level of activity, you can gain substantial health benefits simply by accumulating 30 minutes or more of moderate intensity physical activity (can talk but no sing) on most days of the week.

Third Time Lucky
Weight Watchers Healthy Life Awards finalist Rebecca Bell shares how weight loss success was a case of third time lucky.  She has lost 24.9kg

When I look back I think the main reason I didn’t succeed in losing weight in my previous attempts was because I didn’t realise how big I got.
It wasn’t til a friends wedding where I saw a side profile photo of myself.  I was horrified.  I remember thinking this is it, this time it has to count.
I had tried Weight Watchers in the past with a friend and we always found excuses why we couldn’t stay for the meeting
This time around I stayed for meetings.  Towards the end of the week my motivation would be running low and then I’d attend my meeting and be full of new ideas and fresh thoughts.  I loved drawing ideas and experiences from other members.  To me, they were a tower of support and a wealth of knowledge.
My outlook on food has evolved.  I no longer drink a lot of alcohol.  I still LOVE WINE and enjoy a glass or two, but I want to feel good the next morning for my exercise class.
If you utilise the Weight Watchers programme you will loose weight, but it will also take you on a complete wellness journey.

My top 5 tips to sticking to the Programme
1.  Always attend your weekly meeting
2.  Water, water, water.  Drink water throughout the day and you’ll find yourself less hungry
3.  If you have young kiddies and find that 5pm meal time difficult not to eat their dinner , make a cup of green tea and drink that instead
4.  Tracking- it will make your weight loss journey quicker
5.  Reward yourself and don’t beat yourself up over little things

Five healthy things we learned this week
1.  Keep your weight loss efforts up this week to emerge slim for spring
2.  Make a batch of Propoints free soup to keep in the freezer
3.  Cheaper cuts of meat like lamb shanks make a perfect addition to soups
4.  There are 3 different types of exercise to include in your routine
5.  It doesn’t matter if this is your first or third time at Weight Watchers.  With persistence you will reach your goal

Self Discipline (or lack their of)

Okay guys, let me fill you in.  Here in Australia we have just had a 3 day long weekend, as yesterday was Monday and the Queens Birthday, so we had the day off work.  This is the worst thing that could possibly happen!

In addition all the Weight Watchers Meetings were closed so people who weigh in on Monday are going to have to wait another week to be weighed in.  If it was me and I knew I had trained hard, ate well- I would want to wait another week to be weighed in, but hey that's just me!

To be honest this holiday Monday didn't go so well, you see I have no trouble sticking to my Propoints during the week while I'm at work and even on the weekends.  But this holiday I struggled big time!

I mean I went over by 6 Propoints.  Now most of my friends and family would say "You know Gill it's only 6 Propoints- you did a big run on Saturday (10km) and you would have burnt that off don't worry about it" Or "Its only 6 Propoints- you'll burn that off running on the treadmill during the week or in your kickboxing class" and last but not least "You have those extra 49 Propoints to use during the week- just take it out of them".  These are 3 very valid points and options that I have.  But what they don't understand is the fact that I felt like I needed to go over them and that I did!  I'm very disappointed in myself.

Now I know that I can't change the past, and in my new philosophy is that "I can't undo the mistakes I made yesterday, but I can change the future by making positive choices".  This I think is the best way to be.  Remember the mistakes, but don't dwell on them, you will only obsess.  The best way to do this is to focus on making good, positive, healthy choices to impact your future.  This is exactly what I plan to do today.  I'm starting off the day with scrambled eggs on toast with grilled tomato.

Promise to myself today- To make healthy choices and tackle today head on!

10km Run Today

So today I decided it was time to tackle the "big block run".  Which is from my place, down the Northern Rd, down Andrews Rd, along Castlereagh Rd, then up Coreen Ave, til we reach again the Northern Rd, then run along there for around 1.8km - 2km til we reach home again.

I measured the distance and it was 10km even!  Nice new running track for me!  The last time I ran 10km it took me 2 hours and 10 minutes this was at Norwest.  Today I ran it in 1 hour 40 minutes!  So stoked with how much I have improved.  Its definately all the running and kickboxing its starting to help strengthen the leg muscles, and its getting the endurance / miles in the legs in prep for City2Surf.  Now only 63 days to go!  Time to rip into the training and get the miles in and break in the new shoes and get some running done!

Morphing into a Runner

Now as most of you know I am not a runner I don't generally enjoy it I guess mainly because I was 140kg and trying to run was painful the body and also running out in public with everything wobbling around its not the nicest feeling.  But in saying that I'm no down to 118kg and am no longer worried about what people think if they wanna yell idiotic things or whatever then thats their problem.  I did actually get a few honks on this mornings run, which was kind of nice.  So stoked I got through it though.

I am going to do Knapsack with Robyn tomorrow which is going to be awesome I can't wait!  I will definately be icing down tonight and tomorrow so my knees will be okay to handle knapsack tomorrow.

But now since I am running almost everyday now, I am kind of starting to enjoy it (damn it! My physio - the runner said I would start to enjoy it! He was right) But my week started yesterday and I'm already 10km down.  Gonna try and aim for between 15-18km this week and see how we go!

Bring on Knapsack tomorrow, will post photos soon!

Mid Week Weigh Ins

Morning Everyone

I was just curious to know your opinions regarding mid week weigh ins.  Know as most of you know I weigh in on a Saturday Morning, but I also usually weigh in on a Tuesday / Wednesday or Thursday just to make sure my body is working well with the foods I'm eating and that the weight is coming off.

This week has been a good week for me, I've tracked everything I've ate, I've made good positive food choices and I have trained 3 days since Saturday morning not including today.  And the scales say I've lost 600g in 4 days, which to be honest the way I've been eating and training I would have thought I would have lost more!

Mid week weigh in, the scales are around 400g out compared to the WW ones I weigh in on
Now I know most people would say "Hey! 600g is a great loss you should be really happy with that".

Well I don't like settling for less when I know I am capable of more.

I guess I also need to take into account I have had 3 massive weeks of weight loss- so first week was 2.7kg, then 2kg, then another 2kg.  Maybe it is time for my body to catch up, but I'm gonna tracking and working hard to ensure to a good loss!

I have a function tonight so no training, but I'm going to take my dinner, store it in the fridge and eat that instead of the no doubt chips and dip and lollies and probably alot of other unhealthy food they are planning to serve.  I'm am not to going to be weak and give into the bad food, I'm going to stay strong, go shopping early before work and bring some healthy filling choices to tonights event!

Anyway guys I'm looking forward to getting your feedback!

Running + Kickboxing

Now as most of you know I am not the biggest fan of running, and I guess that its mainly due to the the fact that I am carrying around 120.4kg of weight, which obviously isn't helping- anyway as we know I am doing something about this by attending WW and already dropped almost 7kg.

So I took myself to Jabout

nice and early at 5pm- the class I usually attend doesn't start til 7pm, but I was feeling extra motivated today.  I did 30 minutes on the bike and pumped out 10km, which I was really happy with.  Now to get down the stairs at Jabout, I have to walk right past the treadmill, and it seemed that I was in for a bit of a show down today with it- it was almost like I was in an old western movie and we were getting ready for a shoot out, but I jumped on, and did 20 minutes worth of 30 seconds of work at 10km and walk for 1 minute and continued doing that for 20 minutes.  I couldn't believe I actually got through it!  It seems to me like the treadmill and I are slowly starting to mend our fractured friendship.

Then I decided to treat myself - now, now don't panic, it wasn't in the form of food.  I was due for a massage, so I jumped off the treadmill and went to visit Andrew- who is our resident masseuse.  My shoulders and calves were feeling a bit tight, so he dug into them.  Dug being the word, man it killed me calves, but upside, they are now feeling fantastic!!

Then it was time to tackle the 7pm class with Lappo

Lappo
Boxing Gloves!

Now by this point I had been on the bike, the treadmill, the massage table and I was exhausted!  But I pushed through the class with Alex (new friend).  And finally I was ready to come home take a nice warm shower and relax.

All though that class definately took its toll on me!

This is after 3 hours of training!
In tonight's session I had managed to burn over 1900 calories, which I reakon was pretty impressive.  See its here on my watch

Training watch- burnt 1909 calories!
I also took some photos of myself and have posted them below.  I mean I knew I was big, but I just kind of look like a bit of a square- almost fridge like- but atleast I am on the track to making positive changes for me for the future! :)

Me at 120.4kg

And from the side at 120.4kg
I have my first proper PT session with my new PT tomorrow, so excited, nervous, but actually really ready to train hard give him 100%.

Look out for tomorrows blog post about it!
